Minimally Processed Dog Food — Why How It’s Cooked Really Matters

At Geekmatics, we spend our days fixing tech — but anyone who knows us knows we’re just as passionate about dogs. 💚 Between the rescue work we support through Unleash the Love and all the pups we've rescued and placed, we’ve learned a lot about what really keeps them healthy and happy.

One thing that’s surprised us lately? How much the way your dog’s food is cooked can affect their long-term health.

Let’s talk about A.G.E.s — short for Advanced Glycation End Products. They sound like something out of a science class, but they’re actually compounds that form when food is cooked too hot for too long. And guess what? Most commercial kibble is made under extreme heat and pressure, which means it’s full of them.

So, What Are A.G.E.s?

When proteins and sugars meet high heat, they react and form these compounds. In people, they’ve been linked to inflammation, aging, and even chronic health issues — and it turns out our dogs’ bodies aren’t much different.

That’s why minimally processed dog food is gaining so much attention. It’s made with low-temperature or slow-cooked methods that help preserve nutrients and reduce A.G.E.s. Think of it as the difference between a home-cooked meal and fast food — one feeds your body, the other just fills it.

Lately, we’ve been learning about something called A.G.E.s — Advanced Glycation End Products. It sounds complicated, but it’s really just a fancy name for what happens when food gets cooked too hot.

 Why Temperature (and Time) Matter

Even “high-end” kibble often goes through extrusion — a super-heated, high-pressure process that gives it shape and shelf life. Unfortunately, it also breaks down amino acids and vitamins your dog needs.

By contrast, minimally processed dog foods — like air-dried, dehydrated, or gently cooked meals — retain more of those nutrients naturally. They tend to be easier to digest, and many pet parents say their dogs’ coats, energy, and even breath improve once they switch.

Healthy Alternatives to Try

If you’d rather avoid foods that are cooked to death, look for terms like:

  • Slow-cooked or gently cooked

  • Air-dried or freeze-dried raw

  • Cold-pressed or low-temperature baked

  • Human-grade ingredients

These types of foods retain more nutrients and tend to be easier on digestion.

Here are a few examples that follow gentler cooking methods — and, yes, they’re available on Amazon. (When you buy through our links, it helps support local dog rescue ❤️):

The Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Dog Food – Made from real, human-grade ingredients that are gently dehydrated instead of cooked to a crisp.

Open Farm Gently Cooked Recipe – Slow-cooked meats and veggies, fully traceable ingredients, and no rendered meals.

Stella & Chewy’s Fresh Made Gently Cooked – Cooked in small batches at lower temps to keep more nutrients intact.

Ziwi Peak Air-Dried Dog Food – Air-dried instead of extruded, so it stays closer to real food.

(Always check each brand’s website for how it’s made — “gently cooked” can mean different things depending on the company.)

How to Transition Slowly

If your dog’s been eating regular kibble for years, take it slow when switching. Start with about 25% new food and increase a little each day over a week or two.

Adding a splash of warm water or bone broth can make it more appealing (and help with hydration). A few temporary digestion changes are — that’s just their system adjusting to real food again.
